If you haven’t already heard of the most wonderful thing to happen to us ladies in a long long time, brace yourself for Rent the Runway.  I was invited to an exclusive renting event where a trunk show was taking place in their new office space on Varick Street in Manhattan.

Rent the Runway gave out fashion calenders to all guests! I snagged one to keep me up to date on such a busy schedule.

For only 2 days this event ran, giving insider access of their warehouse (that’s over 10,000 designer dresses).  Racks and racks of top designers from Proenza Schouler to Herve Leger to Yigal Azrouel, these looks were getting booked for all events this season, and they were going fast!

I was fortunate enough to sit down and meet with President and Co-Founder Jennifer Fleiss.  This is what she had to say.

AC: How did the idea of and website develop for Rent the Runway?

JF: My co-founder Jennifer Hyman and I met at Harvard Business School where one night, Jennifer’s sister was having trouble finding something to wear to an upcoming wedding.  She wanted something gorgeous—Hervé Léger maybe, or Proenza—but her modest salary meant that everything high-end was out of reach. What if, Jenn thought, her sister can have access to their dream closet—a dress for every occasion.  And what if designers were able to get their pieces into the hands of young, fashionable women, and build an addiction for designer fashion.

AC: Wow that is so awesome. I can’t believe you guys met and thought of this at Harvard Business School. Way cool! So do you have any plans for any specials with fashion week being right around the corner?

JF: We have a Fashion Night Out team, we plan to go to shows, especially designers shows that we carry.  We are finding every which way to interact with our customers.

AC: Very nice!  And why would you suggest using Rent the Runway?

JF: It’s really a great way to experiment with clothes, designer clothes, without splurging.  It’s a chance to wear an edgier style, something you wouldn’t normally wear.

AC: Tell me a little bit about this event. What is the purpose of it and how are customers reacting to it?

JF: This is a fun opportunity for our customers to come in and try on Rent the Runway styles in our brand new office space.  We are very excited to have a 9,000 square foot office space and am really looking forward to customer expansion, new customers, new segments.

AC: What would you suggest for future customers?

JF:  During the holiday season, book early!  New Years Eve is our biggest night of rentals, so book early to be sure you have your dream dress and dream look for your special event night.
